Why do the ants come back after I spray?
The spray kills the workers on the trail and warns the colony, which relocates and splits. The queens keep laying either way. Baits work in the opposite direction: workers carry the dose back and the colony declines from the inside.
Are fire ants in Phoenix the same ones Texas has?
Mostly no. The Valley has the southern fire ant rather than the imported red fire ant, and the mounds are smaller and less aggressive. The stings still hurt, still welt, and still send sensitive people to urgent care, so treat mounds in yards kids use.
Big red ants made a bare circle in my yard. Problem?
Harvester ants. They clear a disc around the nest and forage for seeds. Away from foot traffic they're harmless and feed the local horned lizards; near a play area or walkway they're worth treating because the sting is severe.
